Apply hot rubber to cold asphalt and it will skin over on contact instead of penetrating, leaving a bead that pops loose by January. Second — and this is the part people miss — cracks are at their widest in cool weather. Asphalt contracts as it cools, so a crack measured in August is narrower than the same crack in October. Sealing in early fall, when the pavement has cooled but not frozen, gets material deeper into the joint than a midsummer application would.

The bottle of cold pour crack filler at the hardware store and a professional hot-applied crack seal are not the same product doing the same job. Cold pour is an emulsion that shrinks as it cures and typically lasts one season. Hot rubberized sealant is melted in a kettle to roughly 380°F, flows into the full depth of the crack, and stays flexible through temperature swings so it can stretch and compress with the pavement instead of cracking alongside it.
A proper job runs in four stages:
- Routing and cleaning: Cracks are cut or wire-brushed to create a clean reservoir, then blown out with compressed air or a hot air lance to remove dirt, loose aggregate, and vegetation. Any organic material left in the crack becomes a bond breaker.
- Drying: Moisture in the crack will flash to steam under hot sealant and blow the bond apart. The surface has to be dry, which is why crack sealing is scheduled around the weather rather than the calendar.
- Hot pour application: Melted rubberized sealant is applied so it fills the crack to the surface, with a modest overband to shed water away from the joint.
